DRUM SET PERCUSSION
The drums that make up the modern drum set, along with the most common add-on drums.
CYMBALS
Cymbals have existed since ancient times and these are responsible for a large part of the modern drum set sound, as well as the sound of orchestras and symphonies.
ELECTRONIC PERCUSSION
Electronic drums were invented in the 1970’s but interest in them commercially did not really take off until the 1980’s, although their appeal was not wide spread at first. It was not until the 2010’s that e-drums could compete with acoustic drums on a playability level.
SYMPHONIC PERCUSSION
Percussion instruments first started being used in Western Classical Music in the 17th Century. They have evolved, like all instruments have, when in use in modern symphony orchestras.
WORLD PERCUSSION
World Music also uses percussion instruments, and some world music has their own specific instruments, made just for that music. These come from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean Islands.
TRAPS
Many percussion instruments were used by drummers to enhance silent movies by creating “special effects” for the movie, mimicking many of the sounds that would have been heard if the movie had sound…
STICKS, MALLETS & BRUSHES
One needs something to use to strike the drum or percussion instrument, such as a drumstick, a mallet or even brushes. There is a beater for almost every situation.
DRUMHEADS
Drums need a membrane to be stretched over the shell, so that when struck with a stick or mallet, will resonant and produce a sound. While once made from animal skins, now they are usually plastic.
